The merchants of the world will weep and mourn for her (Babylon), for there is no one left to buy their goods. She bought great quantities of gold, silver, jewels, and pearls; fine linen, purple, silk, and scarlet cloth; things made of fragrant thyine wood, ivory goods, and objects made of expensive wood; and bronze, iron, and marble. She also bought cinnamon, spice, incense, myrrh, frankincense, wine, olive oil, fine flour, wheat, cattle, sheep, horses, chariots, and bodies—that is, human slaves. “The fancy things you loved so much are gone,” they cry. “All your luxuries and splendor are gone forever, never to be yours again.”
(Revelation 18:11-14 NLT)

Many people keenly follow their stocks, commodities and bonds on a daily basis in the effort to accumulate wealth. The Bible says that the world has committed spiritual adultery by worshipping the material wealth instead of the Lord Almighty. The list of traded goods written in Revelation 18 appears similar to our modern stock exchange. The very same gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh that the wise men offered the infant King Jesus are listed as well. (Matthew 2:11) The wise men gave Jesus the gifts that their society worshipped and held in high regard. The wise men gave up freely the very things that the world stores and hoards in selfishness. They are indeed very wise men to not worship the material wealth of the world which will one day be taken away and lost. Instead they give it away to their King. What they gave up freely will be destroyed and taken from people in the end. The material things that people love and the wealth that they accumulate will be gone. We give freely now or lose it later. The choice is ours.
