Then He (Jesus) said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” (Matthew 4:19 NKJV)

As I walk along a local ocean pier near my home I always see many fisherman trying to catch their dinner. Fishing is an enjoyable past time for many. Hooking a big fish and reeling it in is exciting at least for the fisherman. The fish however does not share the joy because a hook in it’s flesh is very painful. Then the fish is dragged out of their natural water environment and into a new atmosphere where they will suffocate to death. The Lord Jesus is like a fisherman and we are His fish. He hooks our flesh with the painful realization that we have all offended Him by breaking His perfect moral law. The Lord Jesus pulls us closer to Himself away from our natural worldly environment. The sinful nature of our flesh dies to our old lifestyle and we become born again in a completely new atmosphere. This process causes pain but the end result is eternal gain.
