“Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.”
(Romans 8:5, 8, 13 NIV)

Our bodily or fleshy desires often control our agenda. The flesh tempts us with eating unhealthy foods. The flesh prefers slothful activities that expend minimal energy. Passive TV viewing is more desirable then actively exercising. The flesh resists the spiritual disciplines of fasting, praying and studying the Word of God. Spending time with carnal people increases our appetite for carnal things. Listening and obeying the small internal voice of the Holy Spirit kills our carnal instincts and gives us an appetite for the things of God.
