“Jesus was hungry. Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves.”
(Mark 11:12, 13 NIV)

My father had a small orchard and as a youth I spent a lot of time working with the fruit trees. I can remember cutting down any dead branches that were not producing any fruit. It was hard work but the delicious fruit that developed made it all worth it! A gardener plants a fruit tree in expectation of a harvest. The trees that do not produce good fruit just take up space in the garden and will be cut down. When the Lord plants a soul on the earth he patiently waits in eager anticipation for a life that will develop spiritual fruit. “The Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” (Galatians 5:22, 23) If the Lord Jesus were to examine our lives today would he find nothing but leaves?
