Many people avoid sunlight exposure entirely to prevent skin cancer but some sunlight is necessary for good health. Ultraviolet rays from sunlight strike the skin and trigger vitamin D synthesis and this promotes calcium absorption in the gut to facilitate normal mineralization of bone for a strong skeleton. Without sufficient vitamin D, bones can become thin and brittle resulting in poor structural support. Vitamin D prevents rickets which is a bone disease in children. Together with calcium, vitamin D also helps protect older adults from another bone disease called osteoporosis. Vitamin D researchers recommend between 5 and 30 minutes of sunlight exposure without sunscreen at least twice a week.(1) Physical light is good but without the spiritual light of Jesus we are cursed to live in the darkness of unforgiven sins. Jesus illuminates us with his truth which gives us the structural support necessary to walk as children of the light towards our eternal destination in heaven.
